These first day covers were issued by Capitolium (nos. V. 46 and V. 46/a).<br /><br />The cachet for no. V. 46 shows Dante and Beatrice in heaven. In the upper right corner is "1265 / 1965" and at the bottom is the following text: "VII CENTENARIO DELLA NASCITA / DI DANTE ALIGHIERI" (7th centenary of the birth of Dante Alighieri). <span>This cachet is known to have been printed in a blue version and a red version.</span><br /><br /><span>One of the cachets for the V. 46/a series features</span><span> Luca Signorelli's painting of Dante in the cathedral of Orvieto, Italy. The other cachet shows <span>a detail from French Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix's first major painting, </span><em>Dante et Virgile aux enfers</em><span> (known in English as </span><em>The Barque of Dante</em><span> or </span><em>Dante and Virgil in Hell</em><span>). Below both images is text as follows: "VII CENTENARIO NASCITA DANTE ALIGHIERI" (7th centenary [of the] birth [of] Dante Alighieri). </span></span>

These first day covers were issued by Capitolium (nos. 49 and V. 46/a).<br /><br />The cachet for no. 49 shows a montage of the four illustrations by Gustave Doré used on the San Marino Dante stamps of 1965. The illustrations are as follows: <span>portrait of Dante; "Charon and the River Acheron" from </span><em>Inferno</em><span> 3:82–84; "The Eagle" from </span><em>Purgatorio</em><span> 9:29–30; and "The Heaven of the Fixed Stars" from </span><em>Paradiso</em><span> 26:7–9. At the top of the cachet is "1265" and "1965" and at the bottom is "VII CENT. / DELLA NASCITA" (7th centenary of the birth). In the lower right corner of the cachet is the coat of arms of San Marino. This cachet is known to have been printed in a red version and a violet version.<br /><br />The cachet for no. V. 46/a features<span> Luca Signorelli's painting of Dante in the cathedral of Orvieto, Italy. A cinderella stamp is an item that resembles a postage stamp (often with a face value) but not issued for postal purposes by a government. A poster stamp ("erinnofilo" in Italian) is an advertising label, usually larger than a postage stamp.

<span>This set of cinderella stamps was issued by the Federazione italiana contro la tubercolosi e Consorzi provinciali antitubercolari (Italian Federation Against Tuberculosis and Provincial Antituberculosis Consortium) for the "</span><small>XXVIII CAMPAGNA NAZIONALE ANTITUBERCOLARE</small><span>" (28th National Antituberculosis Campaign) in 1965. Funds raised by the sale of the stamps went toward prevention campaigns and aid for the sick.<br /><br />The ten stamps each have a portrait of Dante by a different artist: Giotto, Andrea del Castagno, Domenico di Michelino, Luca Signorelli, Raphael, Domenico Petarlini (here credited as "D. Perterlin"), Vittorio Guaccimanni, and Adolfo de Carolis. One portrait is an anonymous miniature from a fifteenth-century manuscript (MS Riccardiano 1040) now in the Biblioteca Riccardiana in Florence; another is the anonymous Naples Bust.<br /><br />The series was printed by Panetto & Petrelli of Spoleto, Italy, and issued in two formats: a booklet containing one set of stamps and a sheet repeating the set four times.</span>
