First Day Cover - Italy - 1965 - Capitolium
First Day Cover
These first day covers were issued by Capitolium (no. 81) in blue and purple. The cachets are reminiscent of Sandro Botticelli's illustrations for Inferno 19 showing the souls of simonists in the third bolgia (ditch) of the eighth circle of hell, known as Malebolge. The sinners are turned upside down in holes in the ground and their feet are aflame. The original illustration is found in a manuscript volume in the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin known as MS Hamilton 201.
