In that year, Italy enacted Article 724 of the Penal Code, making it an offense to publicly blaspheme against the divinity, symbols, or persons venerated in the state religion (Catholicism) punishable by a fine ranging from 100 to 3000 lire. Many poster stamps were issued by various antiblasphemy committees and this one invokes Dante's "pure" Italian language as propaganda. The stamps show a portrait of Dante from the waist up looking over a scene of mountains and factories with people giving or receiving money in the foreground. The whole scene is surrounded by a frame decorated with oak leaves. Over the image is text as follows: "Prestito a Premi" (premium loans) and "Cassa Nazionale di / previdenza / Società Dante Alighieri". The stamps were printed by the Officina calcografica italiana in Rome, Italy. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Italian government approved the creation of loan programs to benefit various causes. The stamp shows the coat of arms of San Gimignano above a portrait of Bartolo and Giotto's fresco portrait of Dante. The text reads as follows: "VI CENTENARIO / dell'Ambasceria di / DANTE ALIGHIERI / e della morte del concitt.no / STO BARTOLO / SANGIMIGNANO 1899" (6th centenary of the embassy of Dante Alighieri and of the death of the fellow citizen Blessed Bartolo). The Florentine Guelfs sent Dante as an ambassador to San Gimignano where he arrived on May 7, 1300.
